Interview mit George Shefi, der Stolpersteine für seine Mutter, Marie Spiegelglas und seine Tante, Margit Benedik, verlegen ließ. Sie lebten zusammen in der Hauptstraße 5, Berlin-Schöneberg.

Wir, die Klasse 6c, haben Ende April 2024 ein Interview mit George Shefi geführt. George lebte als Kind in den 30er Jahren mit seiner Mutter Marie Spiegelglas und seiner Tante Margit Benedik in der Hauptstraße 5 in Berlin-Schöneberg.

Nach der Reichspogromnacht hatte seine Mutter sich entschlossen, ihren 7-jährigen Sohn George mit einem Kindertransport nach England zu einem entfernten Verwandten zu schicken. George fuhr Ende Juni 1939 von Berlin-Friedrichstraße aus ab.

Als George 13 Jahre alt war, ging er nach Kanada zu einem anderen Onkel, danach über die USA nach Israel. Dort hat er eine Familie gegründet, mit der er in Israel lebt. All das erzählte uns George im Interview. Ausschnitte davon und mehr über George Shefi könnt ihr in unserem Podcast hören.

The class 6c interviewed George Shefi end of April 2024 per Videocall. 

He told us that he lived in Berlin-Schöneberg Hauptstraße 5 and that his mother decided to send him to England with a so called Kindertransport. George was 7 years old as he left his mother and the last time he saw her was the 24. July 1939, when she waved him in Grunewald-Station in Berlin to say goodbye. Of course both did not know at this time that this was the last time they saw each other. 

George told us a lot about the Kindertransport and as his mother was telling him, that it will be a interesting and exciting journey to England he remembered this journey like this. We know the end of it and this makes this journey even more sad. 

George could build a new family in Israel. He is still telling his story to young children and takes all his power so that it will never happen again. We hope that many people listen to this podcast and help as well, that this all will never happen again.
